Pranaswi Reddy, Msc. Candidate in Advertising, COM-BU

Being a first from her family, Pranaswi's journey from India to the U.S. has been a roller coaster. Pranaswi completed her undergraduate in Business Administration. She said, "I am the first to go towards the business industry. Everyone was shocked with my decision. Everyone in my family in their undergrad pursued engineering and then MBA that made sense in India."

During her undergraduate, she was involved in college festivals and events that helped her discover the advertising industry. Besides, she loves sports and has been captain of the basketball and football team.

Being an international student however, isn't all rainbows and sunshine. Upon arriving in the US, Pranaswi's home was broken into and her equipment burglarized.

She was left traumatized by this event and even experienced nightmares. "I used to dread someone breaking into my room while I was asleep. I put wooden drawers aligned to the backdoor so there was no chance of anyone coming inside." While Boston Police has retrieved her equipment, no amount of Police work can restore her sense of security and peace of mind.

BU Journey and Favorite BU Spots

Her BU application was initially motivated by the lure of Boston and the opportunities presented here; however, after reviewing profiles of the advertising faculty, she was certain she wanted to enroll at BU to nurture her skillset. Expressing her joy on getting an admit to her dream university, she said, "If you are doing something like advertising, you want to be in that field, you want to be somewhere where there are so many businesses, and you get to like meet people and network. So that was one of the main reasons I chose Boston University."

When you are an international student, you do not know enough about the country and the industry. But BU is helping her shape her future career by providing her with the necessary resources. She learned about different perspectives of advertising because of her professors. They all have different advertising styles, and the thought process differs from each other to accomplish their campaign goals. "It's just nice to see how different everyone is but still can work in the same field."

When asked about her favorite spots at BU, Pranaswi emphasized COM Lawn and the colorful chair arranged. "I think it's the cutest thing ever, especially when the weather's nice to just sit on those chairs. '' Pranaswi said.

She loves spending time on BU beach, with her AirPods on, carelessly gazing at the Charles river. As an avid reader, Pranaswi also likes visiting Mugar Library and studying.

Pranaswi's BU Routine and Idea Management

Pranaswi is a night owl, and Fall 2021 gave her a tough time with early 8 am classes. While now in Spring 2022, her classes are pretty much flexible. She said, "I will ask my mom to call me when 6:30 pm in India to wake me up. Not only to wake me up but to ask me if I am awake and walking."

Pranaswi planned her spring 2022 classes diligently and ensured she wasn't adding classes before 11:00 am. All her classes are in the evening from 6:15 pm. She usually likes to do her readings in the morning. She said," For me to be creative. Like, for me, I like to be in that zone. It has to be darker. I can only work at night."
Once she is up from bed, she drinks a smoothie and completes her assigned readings for the class. She then heads to her lunch, goes back to reading, and wraps it up by 04:30 pm. She then heads out to reach the 06: 00 pm class.

Understanding that one cannot be creative for 24 hours every day, Pranaswi gives herself a break from work by going on a walk, listening to music, reading, and drinking smoothies.
She loves to go on a walk at night around 2 am, or 3 am. Concerned about safety, she will always inform her friend about where she is going for a walk and when she will be back home. She said, "I usually call one of my friends. And I'm just like, continuously talking. He lives in the US, and I tell him that if you don't hear me talk, then call 911. Although I usually have like pepper spray with me."

Pranaswi is reading A Guide to London Companion.

She also loves to listen to music as it helps her destress.

After Graduation

Pranaswi is looking forward to working in an ad agency to experience the office environment and the culture in the U.S. because it is very different in India. She said, "I just feel like you'd have the creative freedom a little bit at least, you get to explore like different things. So that's one thing I'm really excited to like do."
